With a history spanning almost 400 years, Charleston, South Carolina is one of the most well-known cities on the east coast. Built in 1670 and called "Charles Town" to honor King Charles II, the city quickly grew as a major port for the slave trade because of its natural harbor on the Atlantic. Today the town is known for its alluring architecture, intricate history and pristine beaches.
