The city of Santa Monica boasts the renowned Santa Monica Pier that sits on the prestine beaches that line Santa Monica Bay.  The area was originally populated by the indigenous Tongva people until it was reclaimed by Spaniards. Due to rising sea levels and continuing infrastructural development, the coastal town has implemented projects for beach and dune restoration.
